Erectile Dysfunction Treatment
Erectile dysfunction is the collective name for a disparate group of complaints, and there are as many different treatments as there are causes. Impotence brought on by lowered testosterone levels has perhaps the simplest and most effective treatment, as it is possible to raise the testosterone levels to a healthy standard and rectify the problem permanently. Many of the other treatments work by allowing the user to develop and maintain an erection only long enough for sex to take place.
When erectile dysfunction is caused by an inadequate blood flow to the penis, there is little treatment to permanently alleviate the problem. This is a common cause in older man and diabetes-sufferers, however, and there is plenty of treatment available to temporarily alleviate the impotence.
Pharmacological methods for treatment include pills, tablets, injections and suppositories, and there is also surgery that some men opt for. Inflatable penile implants are an extreme measure that usually produces excellent results.
PDE5 Inhibitors – of which Viagra is the most popular and effective – inhibit the activity of cyclic GMP which is responsible for preventing the relaxation of the muscles in the arteries of the penis. A course of PDE5 Inhibitor will prevent the cGMP from working, causing the muscles to relax and resulting in an erection. These drugs such as Viagra are easily and cheaply available, with no known major side-effects.
If these treatments do not work, some men choose to use a vacuum pump which will aid in the development of an erection, and then fit the compression ring before intercourse to ensure that the erection is maintained.
